Beginnings New York workshop
Beginnings New York is a six-day professional resident arts workshop for children, teenagers and young adults. Introductory through advanced training and advice is provided for the enhancement of skills and the pursuit of professional interviews and auditions for Broadway, dance, film, television, commercials, and print. In addition to a broad-spectrum class curriculum, the workshop’s living and learning environment has a long history of fostering sound nutritional practices, healthy living habits, and the profound enhancement of self-worth.

To help guide you through a typical New York workshop day, we have provided a sample overview of daily class, coaching, lecture, meal, and activity times. Please note carefully that the specific classes and private coaching sessions each student enjoys in dance, acting, and voice each day do NOT appear in the displayed template. This is simply because every New York workshop student is assigned an individual class and private coaching schedule based on their age, interests, level of skill, professional needs, and more. These considerations are assessed by a review of background information submitted by students and parents on their registration form, and also by Mr. Sklar’s notes from each child’s initial interview. Skill levels are additionally assessed by instructors on the first day of classes, and schedule adjustments are made accordingly.
Beginnings is the only performing arts program in the country culminating with each student appearing as a soloist - in acting, voice or dance - in a professional showcase at a major theater in New York City. Parents and family members are invited. In addition to their class training, students receive ample individual coaching and direction during the workshop on material selected for this performance. The showcase has often been attended by a cross-section of major New York and national talent agents, managers, and casting directors. Specific, direct results of this exposure and/or workshop participation over the past three decades have included multiple bookings on Broadway, dance companies, feature films, starring or guest roles on dozens of national prime-time television series, mini-series, daytime serials, and several hundred national commercials, print modeling jobs, voice-overs, and jingles.
